US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Actions
This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Actions Amid Pressure
The administration has encountered increasing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
