The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Squad

The English team has chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.

Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.

However McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
