The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
A new acronym came to light a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals including child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to treat a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that violations are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. But while young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.
The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted peace has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
