Parker and Wardley Set for High-Stakes Showdown with Opportunity at Usyk on the Table
The boxing world is experiencing a notable downturn this year, with few major fights and considerably fewer thrilling fights than typical. The possibility of a important and captivating heavyweight battle between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the London's O2 Arena offers a welcome respite to the challenged industry. Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only started boxing when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has consistently faced skepticism over his skill set. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.
“This is the most important contest, right now, in the heavyweight division. Both these fighters have taken a risk when neither fighter had to agree to this match. Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was injured. Parker wants to fight anyway.
“Wardley is also in an excellent situation and he only had to wait for his time. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He desired to compete – and against Parker because it provides him a shot to skip the line.”
Parker's Viewpoint
Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not thinking about losing. I honor my adversary and his accomplishments and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on fight night.”
Wardley's Stance
Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the two of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my career and the greatest challenge I've faced. But every time I step up I elevate my performance. This Saturday will be the same. The separation between where Joe is and my perceived standing has been a common theme in my boxing life.
“He has vast experience for a long time, with a lot of fights on his resume. In no way is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a significant time and had some heavy fights. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”
The Final Verdict
But the lingering doubt persists that Parker should prove too veteran, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the belief that he is next in line for Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a significant margin.
