Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
