Daughter of Former South African Leader Zuma Denies Terrorism Allegations as Legal Proceedings Commences
The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked charges at the start of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she published on digital networks several years back during violent protests in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her father.
A week of anarchy in various areas of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least three hundred dead and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been alleged of fuelling this turmoil and confronts charges of provocation to commit terrorism and public disorder.
History of the Proceedings
The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the previous president's detention for disobeying a court order to give evidence at an inquiry into accusations of graft while he was serving as president.
The defendant has always refuted the charges against her, with her attorney in the past labelling the prosecution's evidence as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently claimed the charges against her were an effort to resolve political grievances with her dad after he started his own political party and competed against the ruling party.
Support and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her group, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.
The defense has stated that the proof presented by the state is unconvincing and does not have concrete proof for a criminal finding.
