Contaminated Seafood Issue: Indonesia Faces Pollution in Key Manufacturing Area
A significant manufacturing zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing nuclear pollution following an official taskforce detected presence of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities within the site, which includes companies that export frozen marine products.
Urgent Measures and Product Withdrawal
This discovery has triggered emergency cleanup efforts and the relocation of local residents, coming after a similar pollution alert in the US that was linked to the Indonesian plants.
A major multinational retailer is among the companies that have recalled items from their stores after the finding.
Probe and Detection of Pollution
Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated prawns sent by a local company.
Officials issued an advisory instructing distributors and retailers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, even though the found level was well under the agency's action limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate hazard to the public.
The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of worry following extended, ongoing small amount exposure (eg through consumption of polluted products or liquid over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”
Extensive Contamination and Health Checks
Radioactivity tests revealed at least 22 factories in the industrial area were affected. The Indonesian team did not name the 21 other manufacturing facilities, but confirmed they would promptly undergo decontamination processes conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.
The environment minister stated that residents living in strongly contaminated zones would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.
Health authorities also conducted checks on nearby employees and residents located close to the manufacturing zone, identifying nine people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.
Cleanup and Isolation Measures
The contaminated sites will immediately undergo decontamination procedures by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Officials have also selected the site of a recycled metal plant as an isolation center for contaminated goods.
The country, which has no atomic energy facilities or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from overseas.
Origin of Contamination and Import Limits
A taskforce representative told the media that scrap metal imports were the likely source of pollution and announced the authorities would immediately enforce limits on scrap metal imports. He said that vehicles were also being checked for potential exposure as they moved through the area.
About Caesium-137 and Public Concerns
Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive isotope that typically appears in the environment as a consequence of nuclear experiments or incidents, such as Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are found in soil, products and the atmosphere.
The amount detected in the frozen prawns was much less than FDA intervention limits, but the authority explained long-term contact to even small amounts of the element was associated to an higher chance of cancer.
Recall Details
The withdrawn shrimp was available at major store outlets across at least a 12 US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
