Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unwanted gifts could be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.
A Charitable Clear-Out
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 presents received by her by international figures on official trips. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Italian auction firm. The specific date remains to be announced, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue going to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Collection
The presents are currently stored in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.
A complete inventory is yet to be disclosed, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The query centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
- Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.
This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
