Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Recently, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the standard Breakthrough format but features a few key adjustments:
- Each team has only eight human participants, with the remaining filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities performed by human gamers grant full XP, while bot actions offer lower rewards.
- Only two locations can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking are disabled.
So essentially, this mode lives up to its title: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, as it provides additional choices for players looking for different ways to have fun with the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are upset.
Player Responses: Anger to Support
"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," says a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," and another lists everything they consider to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, amid the criticism, there are players explaining how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this game all the time. Let them find a middle ground," adds a different comment. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is perfect for me," and another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Criticisms and Community Input
Despite the support, players have constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it could increase wait times even longer for other modes due to the large amount of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a required amount of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the community meeting them halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Future Prospects: Will Changes Be Made?
If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and acting on player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data shows this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
