Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
